One does not touch the parchment scrolls of a Sefer Torah. The oils from our hands would damage the parchment and rub off the ink. The reader uses a pointer (called a yad meaning "hand") to follow his/her place in the scroll. A yad may be made of metal or wood. Long ago, some were made of ivory, as well. Today, they are usually made of silver.
